Clarinet and Saxophone Society magazine Winter 2001

Music @ Site is the best package to help with sight reading, aural, theory and rudiments, all wrapped up in a fun format that I have encountered. Alistair Logan (a fellow professional clarinettist) has designed the programme to be accessible to most age groups and levels at an incredibly modest price. You can learn to sight read, use the built in metronome, compose, practice rhythmic patterns, learn all about theory, test yourself on aural for exams and much more.In fact to try to list all the features and describe them in one short review is impossible. There are lots of musical games to help with note recognition, crosswords to help general musical knowledge and with musical terms in other languages plus a speaking dictionary to assist pronunciation (Italian German and French at present - more to be added on future upgrades).

It will appeal to those who think learning should be fun and it will take you to diploma standard and beyond. You can print manuscript paper and there is an ingenious sing/playback mode in which you can record your attempts at sight singing or playing and compare with the original.

It can generate hundreds of thousands of sight reading tunes at difficulty levels and a pace to suit beginners to the most advanced players as you can adjust the speed and difficulty of the test to suit your level. At time of writing the CD can be used by any single line instrument but a keyboard version will be available in November /December.Future upgrades will include a progress diary, worksheets for teachers, specimen theory papers and some Russian words for the dictionary.

Many of my pupils have the earliest versions which are not as comprehensive as this latest CD but the free upgrade system will give access to the new version.I can honestly say it has benefitted my students and in many cases considerably improved their sight reading, rhythm and aural.I think this is unbelievable value and will make exam preparation fun. An ideal and affordable Xmas gift too! I wish the author every success.
